I've only read around 3 other books, but my assessment is that most other books focus on how to discipline and raise children (some focuses on theory while others focus on actual how-tos). Being a father of three myself, Steve Murrell's book on parenting has helped me with the great responsibility of being a father. His biblical perspective on family and their practical applications are gems, not merely to be treasured, but to be shared with others. I'm praying that more parents (and parents-to-be) would get a hold of his book and take it's truths to heart.
This book is very specific about what it aims to do and it succeeds in doing just that. As the title says, it's about the heart of parenting. It's not a how-to book of one person's very specific view on how to raise kids. These can vary from culture to culture and family to family.
Instead Pastor Steve focuses on the heart, trusting that the right heart will result in the right behavior, or will correct the wrong behavior more effectively than a checklist can.
The book is also unique in its starting position. Before jumping straight to dealing with children, the author discusses God's heart for us as His children and the heart of the parents. This was an eye opener for me. As a relatively new father, I'm glad to have my own heart addressed before I start dealing with my son. Too many parenting books go straight to dealing with the children without considering the parents.
When the book discusses children, the author focuses on their hearts, not their behavior. Pastor Steve is very honest about many of their shortcomings as a family. But by focusing on the heart, their sons found their way eventually. This is comforting to know that perfection isn't our objective, but focusing on the heart.
The book makes me excited and confident to be a father, while also understanding the magnitude of this responsibility.
When I was still single, I attended a parenting / training seminar with Steve and Deborah Murrell. At that time, I asked myself 'Why am I here?"
That training was an eye-opener for me. Honestly, I enjoyed getting equipped at parenting. They didn't just give us principles, they gave us their stories as parents to their 3 boys. I knew that one day I will apply what I've learned. I love being a husband to Iris and being a father to Hannah. I love this book! I am grateful for their training, their example and now this book about parenting. Thank you!

I'm a father of four, working on my first, second, third, and fourth attempts at parenting, and I highly recommend this book. Steve Murrell has been my pastor at Victory since I was in high school, and I've gotten to know him, his wonderful wife Deborah, and his three sons personally. I've seen him live out the contents of this book firsthand. I've attended Heart of Parenting seminars where Steve and Deborah have taught the principles articulated in the book, and my wife and I have benefited tremendously from their impartation and example.
Like he stated, this book focuses on the heart of parenting, God's heart, our heart as parents, and how to steward the hearts of our children. What I love most about the book is Steve's candor, the stories he tells and the principles he presents are so relatable and very encouraging, both comforting (because you feel you're not alone in your concerns as a parent) and challenging (because you see how God enables us to be better parents) at the same time.
A must-read for parents like me who are trying to figure out this art called parenting.
I've read a lot of parenting books. Most of them focus on methods that can change your child's behavior. I love this book because it brings the parents' attention to the heart of the problem, which is our hearts and the hearts of our children. Our behavior and that of our children's stem from what's going on in the heart. If we don't deal with shaping the heart, whatever parenting method we implement will not produce lasting change.
I also like this book because it draws principles from the Bible, which should be the very foundation of our parenting. A lot of books promote different theories and methods that are very humanistic and child-centered. This book is Christ-centered.
Steve Murrell is a great storyteller, but is able to give a lot of deep insights and lessons as well. I highly recommend this book to every parent!
Pastor Steve is one of the greatest speakers I have ever had the privilege to hear in person. It is not just because of his sense of humor and presentation of the message, but more so the heart of his message. The idea that the home is the most exciting mission field that one will ever have is a unique idea to me. This book puts into perspective what your role as a parent is. There is only one role. There is only one ultimate goal.
This book was so easy to read. It was all in story format and there were so many good points to apply. Thankfully I am still a young parent, so I am happy that I can learn from the mistakes and things they did well as parents. Unlike most parenting books, it is not a list of dos and donts. Be ready to be taken into the household of the Murrells.
I strongly recommend that you read this book if you want to disciple your children in your home.
